You can sense night creatures. A night creature, for the purposes of this spell, is defined as any evil outsider, undead or creature that is hindered or vulnerable in sunlight (such as an orc or shadow mastiff). The amount of information revealed, depends on how long you study a particular area or subject.
Note that unlike detect evil, this spell functions on creatures that have their alignment concealed, such as from an undetectable alignment spell.
1st Round: Presence or absence of night creatures.
2nd Round: Number of night creature auras in the area and the strength of the strongest night creature aura present. If you are of good alignment, and the strongest night creature aura’s strength is overwhelming (see below), and the creature has HD of at least twice your character level, you are stunned for 1 round and the spell ends.
3rd Round: The strength and location of each night creature aura. If an aura is outside your line of sight, then you discern its direction but not its exact location.
Aura Strength: The strength of a night creature aura depends on the type of night creature you’re detecting and its HD, as given in the following table. If an aura falls into more than one strength category, the spell indicates the strongest one. This spell does not detect lingering auras as detect evil does.
| Aura Power | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Creature | Faint | Moderate | Strong | Overwhelming |
| Vulnerable to/Hindered by Sunlight (HD) | 10 or lower | 11—25 | 26—50 | 51 or higher |
| Undead (HD) | 2 or lower | 3—8 | 9—20 | 21 or higher |
| Evil Outsider (HD) | 1 or lower | 2—4 | 5—10 | 11 or higher |
Each round, you can turn to detect night creature in a new area. The spell can penetrate barriers, but 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead or 3 feet of wood or dirt blocks it.
This description has been slightly modified to match similar spells like detect evil and detect undead. In particular, on the 2nd round, the original text does not include anything about being stunned if the aura is overwhelming.
